People of Indian origin (PoIs) living in the US now number 1.7 million, with much of the growth in numbers having happened in the last twenty years. PoIs in the US are highly educated and the majority are active in business and the professions earning well over the national average wage. IT, health care and the hotel sector are the major areas of concentration.
Philanthropic practices in this community have been little studied and this CAF India publication is a useful guide. Charitable Indian foundations do exist in the US, but philanthropy remains significantly unorganised. The editor, Gopa Kumar, found that individuals who were surveyed showed a willingness to give significantly more than they do currently. The main reason they don't give more is the abscence of credible organisations through which to channel their support.
The various chapters in this book look at the history of the Indian diaspora, giving patterns amongst the Indians living in the US, and the characteristics of specific communities. There is also an interesting chapter documenting the influence of Indian residents in the US on the transformation of the health care sector in India. The book contains a useful directory of the major Indian diaspora associations in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, and a descrption of the main philanthropic Indian foundations in the US.
