Get closer to a fundraiser and make a lasting difference

From time to time, the Resource Alliance organises support groups for young fundraisers in London to discuss specific fundraising issues. The Resource Alliance is also involved in arranging exposure visits for foreign fundraisers to London.

Please find below the details of some of our latest hosting and mentoring work.

Study tour for Indian fundraisers

"Fundraising" in India is only now beginning to take shape as a formal profession. Exposing Indian fundraisers to fundraising techniques that have been successful in the West will help them to introduce similar activities in India. This in turn will result in the eventual creation of new forms of philanthropy in India.

From 22nd - 27th of April 2007, the Resource Alliance organised a study tour for 10 fundraisers from India to come to the UK and experience these techniques for themselves.

Various organisations played host to these fundraisers, who were exposed to a varied programme of fundraising methods and environments. Their hosts shared with them the skills, experience and practical knowledge from their individual disciplines, including Direct Marketing, Major Donors, Diaspora Fundraising, Corporate Fundraising and Legacy Giving, and provided an opportunity for the group to observe their UK counterparts in their work first-hand.

Latin American fundraisers in London

A core group of 10 young Latin American fundraisers met in London to advance the debate around fundraising and to gain additional knowledge in this field. With the help of the Resource Alliance, from November 2006 to May 2007, a series of 8 mini seminars was run around the following topics:

  • Getting started in fundraising - an introduction to basic principles and types of funding potentially available
  • Grant seeking - where to find information (UK, US, Europe), what to look for, examples of some relevant donors and their requirements, issues like decentralised decision making in donors, need for UK charity status or 501c3 for some sources and ways round this
  • Proposal writing - how to write great proposals, including establishing contact with donors, understanding their interests, and follow up.
  • Social enterprise - how to earn income while doing good at the same time - sources of capital to start social ventures.
  • Corporate sector - winning support from the corporate sector, inc. advice, services, products etc.
  • Raising funds from individuals - general principles around donor motivation, making the case, overview of various ways to approach and involve people
  • Events fundraising - include challenge events, sponsored events, dinners and benefit gigs
  • Recruiting and developing donors through direct marketing (with examples from LA, e.g. Greenpeace Brazil)
