Certificate Course In Resource Mobilisation & Communication
Non-government organisations (NGOs) play a pertinent role in developing Kenya towards the challenge of establishing a social system in which society will come before the individual. However, it is increasingly difficult for NGOs in Kenya to mobilise support for their cause with the decline in global funding. The NGOs have to look at alternative strategies in order to sustain their respective causes.
Strathmore University in collaboration with the Resource Alliance have launched a twenty-day course in fundraising, targeted at staff/volunteers raising funds for their organisations. This course enables participants to mobilise a diverse range of financial and non-financial resources in order to improve their organisation’s financial sustainability.
At the end of this twenty-day course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the major trends in the legal issues and social/political environment in which they operate.
- Critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the organisations existing resource base.
- Formulate a plan on how to diversify the resource base.
- Identify the main funding sources and appropriate techniques to secure them.
- Appreciate the role of communication as a pre-requisite to fundraising.
- Set up effective systems for reporting and communicating with donors.
The course will be comprised of seven modules, each covering a different aspect of resource mobilisation. These modules are:
- Module 1: Introduction to Resource Mobilisation
- Module 2: Getting Started with Resource Mobilisation
- Module 3: Communication and Relationship Building
- Module 4: Researching and Sustaining Donors
- Module 5: Resource Mobilisation Techniques
- Module 6: Strategy and Planning
- Module 7: Ethical Issues in Resource Mobilisation
Upon completing all the modules, participants will be assessed, and a Certificate of Proficiency will be awarded to all participants who successfully complete the course.
The first round of the course was begun in July 2007, with classes held at Strathmore University. Details of future courses will be posted here as they become available.
