CAMPAIGNING FUNDAMENTALS

Build campaigns that mobilise people and drive real change.

This hands-on masterclass will introduce you to the world of campaigning and mobilisation.

Campaigns are one of the most powerful tools organisations have to influence change, mobilise communities, and inspire people to take action. But many organisations struggle with how to design campaigns that truly cut through – campaigns that engage supporters, build momentum, and translate public interest into meaningful impact.

In this practical two-hour masterclass, you’ll learn the fundamentals of building effective campaigns that connect community action, supporter engagement, and fundraising. Drawing on real examples from Greenpeace’s global campaigning work, the session will explore how successful campaigns are designed, how supporters are mobilised, and how organisations can turn grassroots action into wider movements.

Whether you’re launching your first campaign or looking to strengthen those you’re already running, you’ll get a clear framework and practical insights to help you build meaningful and successful campaigns.

Why this masterclass

This session will help you understand the building blocks of effective campaigning and show you how to apply them within your own organisation.

The masterclass is for you if you are:

  • Keen to launch campaigns but are unsure how to structure them
  • Running communications and activities that feel disconnected from your wider strategy
  • Struggling to mobilise supporters beyond one-off actions
  • Looking for ways to turn public engagement into sustained supporter momentum
  • Curious how leading campaigning organisations design and run successful campaigns

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the core building blocks of successful campaigns.
  • Explore real campaign examples and mobilisation strategies.
  • Leave with practical ideas you can apply to your own work.

WORKSHOP TRACKS

Key directions that will shape your learning at IFC 2026.

Workshop tracks are guided pathways through the International Fundraising Congress, each spotlighting a key area of fundraising and social impact.

At IFC 2026, you will build your own programme of learning and engagement – our tracks will help you easily navigate and plan those sessions that are most critical to your work.

Fundraising & Resourcing

At the heart of IFC remains one simple question: how do we resource the work we care about? This track focuses on the craft and strategy of fundraising today, including how fundraising is changing and what you need to know to stay ahead.

  • Mass fundraising and public engagement
  • Reimagining fundraising campaigns and supporter journeys
  • Fundraising leadership, strategy, and decision-making
  • Fundraising in hostile, polarised, or low-trust environments
  • Ethical fundraising and public trust
  • The future of donor relationships and public giving
  • New and alternative financing models

Civil Society, Activism, & Global Perspectives

The social impact sector is operating in a more politicised and challenging environment than many of us have experienced before. This track explores how organisations and movements are responding, and what we can learn from each other.

  • Fundraising as civic participation and public action
  • The role of civil society in shaping change, not just responding to crisis
  • Movements, organising, and collective power
  • Global collaboration and learning across contexts
  • Fundraising in restrictive or shrinking civic spaces

Leadership, Power, & Ways of Working

What does it take to lead well when it can feel like a relentless task? This track is about navigating constant change and the risk of burnout while thinking differently about accountability and how our organisations actually work.

  • Leadership under pressure and uncertainty
  • Middle management and frontline leadership
  • Power, accountability, and decision-making
  • Burnout, resilience, and sustainable leadership
  • Leading organisational and cultural change
  • Letting go of leadership models and practices that no longer serve us

Audiences, Supporters, & Public Behaviour

Everything we do ultimately depends on people choosing to care, act, or give – which means understanding our supporters and cultivating deeper, more meaningful relationships with them is a critical part of our work.

  • Understanding supporter motivation, trust, and behaviour
  • Responding to donor fatigue, disengagement, and distrust
  • Behaviour change and public participation
  • Listening to communities and supporters, not just communicating to them
  • Building long-term relationships in a fragmented attention economy

Marketing, Communications, & Public Narrative

How we talk about our work shapes how people see, connect with, and engage with our causes. Communications and storytelling are key drivers of trust – and a key focus at IFC 2026.

  • Reimagining how the public sees fundraising and fundraisers
  • Challenging damaging narratives
  • Comms as a driver of trust, mobilisation, and long-term support
  • Integrating fundraising, marketing, and campaigning effectively
  • Storytelling for systems change and social movements
  • Communications in moments of crisis, backlash, or misinformation
  • Protecting organisational voice in a polarised media landscape

Innovation, Change, & Learning

Most organisations know they need to change or adapt in some way, but actually doing it is rarely straightforward. What does it really look like to experiment, learn, and evolve – especially in times of crisis or change?

  • Innovation in fundraising models, income mix, and resourcing
  • Experimentation, testing, and learning
  • New ways of organising teams, roles, and decision-making
  • Innovation under constraint
  • Reimagining the systems, structures, and processes that no longer serve humanity
  • Scaling change without losing values, trust, or legitimacy

Technology, AI, & Digital Practice

The way tech is changing how we communicate, fundraise, and mobilise seems to be changing faster than we can keep up with. This track will help you stay ahead of the curve.

  • AI in fundraising and communications: practical uses, ethics, and risks
  • Digital mobilisation and organising
  • Data, tech, and infrastructure for impact
  • Technology as an enabler of – not a replacement – for human connection

Financial Sustainability

Financial realites are getting harder. Which is why we’re creating space to talk honestly about funding pressures, income choices, and tough decisions.

  • Financial realities: pressures, uncertainties, & long-term viability
  • Funding models under strain and trade-offs being made
  • Balancing growth, stability, and mission
  • Risk, reserves, and responsible decision-making
  • Making ethical financial choices in times of constraint

The International Fundraising Congress is more than just a conference.

It is a global gathering of fundraisers, campaigners, activists, and world-changers. Join us in October 2026 and reaffirm your commitment to being part of a force that shapes the world, not just one that responds to disaster.

UNSTOPPABLE: OUR THEME FOR IFC 2026

Reimagine. Reclaim. Rebuild.

A global leadership moment for people shaping the future of social impact.

Across every region of the world and within every movement, leaders are rising to challenge extractive systems, reshape power dynamics, and build networks of solidarity rooted in trust, dignity, and agency.

Our sector is not standing still. Momentum is building. People are coming together in ways they never have before. We are unstoppable.

Building Collective Agency

Unstoppable does not reflect blind optimism or grinding resilience, but collective agency. The power that emerges when we choose collaboration over competition, courage over caution, and imagination over inherited norms is limitless.

IFC 2026 will equip you with the knowledge and tools to do better, more equitable, and more effective work, and with a new global network of leadership peers who believe in change as strongly as you do.

Pillars of Change

IFC 2026 is a call to reimagine, reclaim, and rebuild. To continue to drive transformation within our sector and across the world.

  • The power to reimagine allows to envision a world that does not yet exist; it is radical, creative, and looks to the future. It gives us the strength to challenge inherited systems, mindsets, and dependencies, and to create new pathways for justice and change.
  • When we reclaim things that are rightfully ours, we demand an end to the systems and powers that have tried to take them from us. Our communities, our voices, and our agency are the foundation to create lasting change.
  • The commitment to rebuild systems and relationships that nurture equity and shared power is an acceptance of our responsibility not just to demand better, but to make better a reality.

Across the world, we see signs of change: youth movements bringing down leaders who have not served their people, grassroots organisations leading response and resilience, citizens who have never protested making their voices heard as they stand against injustice.

When we reimagine, reclaim, and rebuild, we can move beyond resilience into revolution; one that is rooted in heart, driven by purpose, and powered by us all. We are, and always will be, unstoppable.

What This Means for You

At IFC 2026, your learning will be rooted in these pillars of change. Unstoppable isn’t about growth at all costs, top-down leadership, or pretending our sector isn’t under pressure. It’s about challenging narratives that limit fundraising and leadership, refusing to accept systems that no longer serve communities, and rebuilding ways of working that are ethical, resilient, and fit for the future.

You will experience:

  • Sessions that are grounded in real-world practice and success
  • Clearer priorities on what matters for your work right now
  • Expert training with a global perspective you won’t find anywhere else
  • True collaboration with a network of CEOs and senior sector leaders in marketing, operations, communications, innovation, and more

IFC 2026 celebrates the people and movements who refuse to stand still – and is a must-attend event for senior social impact leaders.

The Longest-Running Fundraising Conference

The International Fundraising Congress began as a small gathering of fundraisers in Noordwijk in the Netherlands in 1981 and has been held there there ever since. Our hybrid model now welcomes thousands of fundraisers, campaigners, activists, and changemakers virtually in addition to the thousand or so in-person attendees.

At the 2025 event, one thing was unmistakably clear: the social impact sector is not standing still. There has been a perceptible shift from charity to solidarity, from dependency to agency, and from fragmentation to collective purpose. The IFC Manifesto for Change, created in collaboration with attendees and the wider community, captured that shift. You can read it here.

The International Fundraising Congress is more than just a conference.

It’s about what you will do next. Join us in October 2026 and reaffirm your commitment to being part of a force that shapes the world, not just one that responds to disaster.

Ikamva Labuntu

Global perspective and a sense of belonging.

IFC supports fundraisers as it guides them to increased success.

The Ikamva Labantu Charitable Trust, which offers social programmes for children, young people and older people in South Africa, credits the IFC and other Resource Alliance events with helping it to significantly grow it’s seniors programme and build monthly giving.

After a disappointing fundraising campaign, Jovana and her colleague, Ronell began attending Resource Alliance professional development events in 2017. The support they found there, coupled with the inspiration and education that are the hallmarks of IFC, IFC Pop-Ups and other events, was immediately and tangibly reflected in their work.

The learnings that Jovana and Ronell took from IFC Pop Ups, the Great Fundraising Masterclass and IFC significantly contributed towards the growth of the Ikamva Labantu’s seniors programme, from R2.5 million in 2014 to R12 million in 2019.

That growth has enabled the trust to sustain its seniors programme, which serves 1,500 elderly adults in 21 townships around Cape Town. It ensures that each of the organisation’s seniors clubs has its own club assistant – a ‘carer’ who is equal parts friend and caregiver and who keeps seniors active and connected. Seniors in clubs who didn’t have a club assistant tended to be less active and social. The carers also reach out door to door to identify isolated and abused or neglected seniors.

“IFC really gave us the power and confidence to maintain and grow it,” Ronell says. “Even though we have lost the initial major donors that kick-started the programme, we have developed and grown it as a result of what we learnt.”

“The growth in our individual giving programme has also been helped by what we have learnt,” she adds.

The results: Strengthening their monthly giving programme and positive response from donors

Ikamva is now formalising its monthly giving programme and setting up regular communication with donors, including a new group of monthly givers.

“The response by donors to this shift has been amazing”, Jovana says. “One major donor who donated to the Nomsa pre-school appeal shared a screen shot of Ikamva’s thank-you on her Facebook page with the remark, ‘You made my day’”.

In all its emails, newsletters, blog posts and correspondence, Ikamva is increasing the connection between the donor and the beneficiary – and it’s paying off.

Jovana also realised another benefit of attending IFC in the Netherlands. She secured an invitation to apply for funding as a result of visiting a donor in Amsterdam before the conference. It also helped her to see potential to grow income in Europe, as well as giving her an international perspective on issues facing the ageing and how social programmes can help.

Like Jovana, Ronell also leaves IFC events with a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.

“The most important development to come out of my attendance of Resource Alliance events is that I see myself as part of a group of dynamic professional individuals working in this sector”, she says. “The RA helped me see my career in different way. It’s not just a hobby or for volunteers.”

“It’s very affirming and I feel like a change-maker, not just someone begging for money,” she adds. “It also helped to reference learnings internationally, which has been enormously validating.”

Mobilise supporters & build campaign momentum • 15 April

A one-day online accelerator for NGOs stuck on how to mobilise people, build momentum, and turn ideas into action.

Does your team have a great idea but needs support to take it to the next level?

The Creative Organising Lab is a one-day online workshop led by four creative agencies in West Africa, Europe, India, and South America.

Within the global context of shrinking civic space, rising disinformation, and pressure on the social impact sector, we’ve initiated this lab to support organisations to transform ideas into action. Working with our creative partners, selected organisations will be supported to take their campaigns to the next level to mobilise people, build momentum, and drive action. It will be a practical, hands-on day with tangible outcomes.

How can my organisation take part?

The application process is simple. You will answer a few short questions about your organisation and your goals, including a short pitch of your campaign or mobilisation challenge.

12 applicants will be selected to take part in the Creative Organising Lab, workshopping their challenges with our creative agency partners. At the end of the one-day workshop, each will leave with a mini campaign kit specific to their challenge, including creative framing, draft visuals and copy, messaging, and a short rollout plan.

Applications close 23 February. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by 20 March.

What if my organisation isn’t selected?

The Creative Organising Lab will be livestreamed! Even if your organisation isn’t chosen to participate, you can watch along and take advantage of extensive creative expertise and learnings.

You can also register to join the livestream if you don’t have a campaign or mobilisation challenge that’s ready to pitch, or if you’re just interested to learn more about the process.

Exposure to AI and its various platforms was useful – was able to see beyond the general publicity and hear that many others share my questions about security and data protection.
… came out of it with my mind spinning with all the new ideas and developments that are taking place with AI and digital in the nonprofit space.
Great conference. I’ve attended FRO almost every year. It’s always good, but this one was possibly the best one yet!
I am planning to rewatch the sessions, to watch the ones I missed, and also to go through the presentations and links shared… Definitely very valuable food for thoughts and fundraising practice.

2025 programme outcomes

What did the 2025 programme achieve?

The 2025 Resource Alliance Leadership Programme brought together 100 leaders from 37 countries working across civil society, philanthropy, fundraising, social enterprise, and movement-led organisations.

Over the course of the year, participants engaged in four Leadership Summits, four Action Labs, and — for the first time — Regional Peer Leadership Groups, creating space for shared learning, collaboration, and practical action on some of the most pressing challenges facing our sector.

Together, these spaces enabled leaders to explore emerging trends, test new ideas, co-create tools and resources, and support one another through real-world leadership challenges.

To apply to join the 2026 programme, email Senior Programme Curator, James Tennet.

Leadership Summits

The four Leadership Summits convened the full cohort to explore big-picture themes, surface shared challenges, and identify collective priorities for action.

Summit 1: Future Trends

This Summit focused on understanding the most critical trends shaping the social impact sector globally, grounded in the findings of the CIVICUS State of Civil Society Report. It featured an opening talk and Q&A from Mandeep Tiwana, Secretary General of CIVICUS, followed by regional perspectives from: Marcelo Iñarra & Hernan Nadal (Argentina), Ingrid Srinath (India), and Jimm Chick Fomunjong (Ghana). Together, these contributions helped participants explore how global trends are playing out differently across regions, and what this means for leadership, civic space, and collective action.

Summit 2: New Financing Models

This Summit explored new and innovative approaches to resourcing the social impact sector at a time of declining traditional funding and ODA. Speakers included Mauricio Preciado-Awad, Executive Director of Blended and Innovative Finance at Save the Children Global Ventures, and Ronika Mumbire, Executive Director at Zimbabwe Women’s Bureau. The session examined both large-scale blended finance models and smaller, grassroots-led social enterprise innovations, offering practical insights into how organisations are adapting to shifting funding landscapes.

Summit 3: Collaboration

This Summit focused on collaboration in practice and featured updates from each of the four Action Labs running as part of the Leadership Programme. Participants heard directly from Action Lab members about: what they were working on, what support or collaboration they needed, how others in the cohort could contribute to or build on their efforts. This created opportunities for cross-pollination, peer support, and wider engagement across the cohort.

Summit 4: Action

The final Summit took place in person at IFC 2025 and centred on moving from insight to action. It featured framing contributions from lead speakers across the IFC Big Topic sessions. Participants then worked in breakout groups to begin the co-creation of a Manifesto for Change, capturing shared priorities, tensions, and concrete actions for sector-wide transformation.

Action Labs

Four Action Labs ran throughout the year, bringing together small groups of leaders to focus on issues of shared interest and urgency. Each Lab used a shared Action Framework to guide its work and drive tangible outcomes.

Strategy & People Action Lab

This Lab focused on leadership, wellbeing, and organisational culture in a time of increasing pressure and uncertainty.

Key outcomes included:

  • Two practical leadership tools to address burnout and wellbeing:
    • a personal reflection tool for leaders
    • a structured conversation guide for teams to discuss workload, support, and psychological safety
  • A short case study library, Workplaces that Thrive 2025, showcasing inclusive, people-centred leadership models in practice
  • Shared learning on building ethical, resilient, and high-performing teams in complex environments.

>> Coming Soon: Workplaces that Thrive 2025 case study library

Fundraising Innovation Action Lab 1

This Lab explored how emerging technologies — particularly AI — can support more equitable and effective fundraising.

Key outcomes included:

  • The co-creation of a free CustomGPT tool (the Funder-Finder & Opportunity Matcher) to help organisations identify suitable grant funders based on their work, geography, and needs
  • Guidance on ethical AI use, including prompt libraries and interpretation guides
  • A focus on accessibility for smaller and grassroots organisations, with resources shared openly for sector-wide use

Fundraising Innovation Action Lab 2

This Lab focused on practical, ethical use of AI and technology in fundraising and operations.

Key outcomes included:

  • An AI use-case library for fundraisers, documenting how organisations around the world are already using AI responsibly
  • A mentoring-focused approach connecting emerging and experienced fundraisers across geographies
  • Case studies highlighting community-led and locally rooted fundraising practices, particularly from underrepresented contexts

Climate Action Lab

Building on work begun in 2024, this Lab focused on launching a youth-led, justice-centred climate campaign.

Key outcomes included:

  • A campaign supporting implementation of the International Court of Justice ruling on states’ climate obligations
  • A growing library of youth-led climate justice case studies
  • A ready-to-use case study template and question set for grassroots organisers
  • A mapped coalition of 60+ potential partners (youth organisations, legal experts, creatives, funders, and amplifiers) to support and scale the campaign
  • Campaign materials launched and amplified in alignment with IFC 2025 and COP processes

The group that the Resource Alliance put together was a powerful one of practitioners, decision makers, and committed citizens to make impact. There are different perspectives on the challenges we face, but one thing is given – the urgency of acting together. The online discussions were very dynamic and the agenda items were great, sessions were amazingly facilitated, and the group was committed to some very interesting discussions.

My biggest takeaways were research that I can immediately use; some fresh ideas for navigating those aforementioned thorny problems; and a better sense of what other organisations are struggling with and what it looks like in specific cultural contexts. In other words, it was time and financial investment tremendously well spent. The Talent Lab sessions in particular were terrific. I found the organisational structure and fundraiser purpose research fascinating, and really appreciated the in-depth case study content with ability to have extensive Q&A.

    BREAK THROUGH AND BLOOM

    Step into the Mystical Forest

Every year at the International Fundraising Congress, we let our hair down on the last evening of the event, donning captivating costumes and dancing until morning in an astonishing new world, transformed for one night only. This October, you’re invited to take a breath and step into an ethereal place of quiet power, ancient roots, and hidden magic…

When it feels like you can’t see the wood for the trees, it’s time to break through and enter the Mystical Forest!

In this space, transformation doesn’t shout; it whispers. Like the softness of a fern unfurling in the dark, the resilience of moss on stone, and the quiet pulse of life beneath the surface, the personal and emotional strength it takes to persevere often go unseen. This year’s Gala Night theme, Break Through and Bloom, celebrates the quiet strength you draw on every day in your work, the growth that brought you where you are today, and the actions that are shaping who you will become.

Here, every step forward is a breakthrough. This will be a space that honours not what you have accomplished, but how far you’ve come on your journey. Be inspired by the resilience of our world and the cycles of nature, and join a cast of forest creatures, fey beings, and growing things that are much more than what they seem.

When planning your costume, please be aware of cultural sensitivities. Appropriating elements of another race or culture can be disrespectful as we strive for equity and inclusion. Please avoid ceremonial clothing that isn’t part of your culture, religious garb in general, or anything that sexualises another culture’s appearance or dress. DIY outfits are strongly encouraged and our judges this year will be on the lookout for the best costumes that reduce, reuse, or recycle.

I’ve been able to see some of the world’s best speakers, most successful fundraisers – the people who have literally changed the face of how the world responds to some of its challenges.
    Ben Swart
    NSPCC, UK
The sessions were amazing. All of the speakers were excellent, knowledgeable and engaging. Beyond the great sessions I attended, I got the chance to meet and learn from the best fundraising minds from around the world in between sessions over coffees and meals. I even got to meet some of my long-time fundraising heroes. The IFC was easily the five most rewarding days of my professional career.

      The International Fundraising Congress 2025

      • 14-17 October 2025
      • Noordwijk & online

You’re here because you believe in a better world. You’re here because you believe in equity, in human rights, in protecting our planet, and in caring for all of its people. So are we.

As the pace of change accelerates and the challenges humanity faces rise, life-saving programmes are being stripped of funding and hard-won gains in diversity, equity, inclusion, and access are under attack. Fundraising cannot afford to stand still. At IFC 2025, we’re bringing together the brightest minds, the boldest ideas, and the most innovative new strategies to reshape and secure the future of social impact.

The International Fundraising Congress comprises four days of rich and innovation-led learning and sharing, brilliantly curated by the independent IFC Advisory Panel, a group of leading fundraisers from across the globe. Held annually in Noordwijk in the Netherlands, IFC 2025 will give you the opportunity to connect with fundraisers and social impact leaders all over the world, both in person and online.
