Blockchain philanthropy in Southeast Asia

Building community participation through decentralisation.

Beyond a token on a public ledge and the certificate of ownership of a digital asset, the NFT is a byproduct for the blockchain and the smart contract technologies – technologies that have the potential to expand the way we organise ourselves as communities.

Artists who have been working with this technology from its nascency, such as Furtherfield and the more recently developed Black Swan DAO, are looking to transform the art world through how blockchain technologies can structure decision making and participation in cultural organisations. The implications for this include that centralised organisations, like governments and the National Gallery in Singapore, may eventually have tools to fundamentally decentralise, or at the very least create greater community participation in how these organisations are run.
