What can we learn from people who stand in opposition to our values?
All over the world, civil society’s values are under attack.
Populist radical-right movements are successfully shifting public opinion and gaining ground through simple messages, bold narratives and relentless digital campaigning.
They are driving the news cycle and forcing civil society into defensive positions. Well-funded and digitally savvy, radical-right voices dominate social media feeds and make polarising and exclusionary ideas feel normal.
They are winning the battle for attention, and civil society needs to respond with equal determination and focus. We need to better understand what it takes to reach beyond our existing constituencies, win broader public support and resonate with silent majorities – and then act on those insights.
Through practical examples from organisations and movements around the world, this discussion will explore how the radical right is winning attention, what civil society can learn from its success without compromising its values, and how our own models need to change in response.
You’ll leave the session with practical ideas, relevant examples, and adaptable strategies you can use within your own organisation to strengthen your response to the populist radical right.
Big Topics are high-impact, immersive, and solution-focused sessions designed to challenge our assumptions and drive collective action. These facilitated sessions don’t feature panels of experts of lengthy presentations, but are an opportunity to work directly with your sector peers on the global issues that need collective solutions.
