Crowdfunding for Democracy

Discover how crowdfunding in Slovakia is mobilising communities in support of democracy, the rule of law, and independent media.

35 years after the Velvet Revolution, Slovakia’s civil society and democratic institutions face immense pressure. While independent media and NGOs play a crucial role in defending democracy, they are increasingly underfunded and vulnerable. Crowdfunding has emerged as a powerful tool to mobilise people, amplify their voices, and secure financial support for causes that matter.

This session will explore how crowdfunding can be used not only as a fundraising mechanism but also as a way to build communities, increase public engagement, and reinforce trust in independent journalism and civil society initiatives. You will explore successful campaigns and key strategies, and learn how storytelling and values can act as a magnet for support.
